Mobile App Design

Native mobile UI/UX design for iOS and Android, distinct from responsive web design: interfaces built around each platform's own navigation model, gesture vocabulary, and component library rather than a browser layout resized for a phone. Covers Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and Google's Material Design 3, native gesture and haptic patterns, and the screenshot, icon, and store asset design each app store requires at submission.

What Native Mobile App Design Covers

1

Platform Guideline Compliance

  • Apple Human Interface Guidelines (HIG): navigation patterns (tab bars, nav stacks, modals), SF Symbols usage, and Dynamic Type/accessibility sizing
  • Google Material Design 3: navigation rail/bar conventions, the elevation and motion system, and dynamic color theming
  • Platform-appropriate typography: SF Pro on iOS, a Material-compatible variable font on Android, rather than one typeface forced across both
  • Safe area and notch/cutout handling for current device form factors on both platforms
2

Native Component Libraries & Design Systems

  • Figma component libraries built on iOS's native UIKit/SwiftUI components and Android's Material 3 component set, not a generic web UI kit
  • Design tokens (spacing, color, typography, elevation) structured to map directly onto SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose theme objects
  • Reusable, documented component variants (default, pressed, disabled, loading states) handed off ready for engineering
3

Gesture & Interaction Design

  • Swipe-to-delete, pull-to-refresh, edge-swipe-back navigation, and long-press context menus mapped to each platform's expected gesture vocabulary
  • Haptic feedback points specified for key interactions (iOS Taptic Engine, Android HapticFeedbackConstants)
  • Motion and transition specs (screen-to-screen, modal presentation) matched to platform-native animation curves rather than generic easing
4

App Store Visual Assets

  • App Store and Google Play screenshot sets sized per current spec, including required device sizes and localized text overlays
  • App icon design delivered in the full required export set (1024px master plus all iOS/Android resolution variants)
  • Play Store feature graphic and App Store preview video storyboards where applicable

Native Mobile Design Capabilities

Design work scoped to how iOS and Android apps actually behave, not a resized website.

Why This Isn't Just Responsive Design

Native mobile UI is a different discipline from adapting a web layout to a smaller viewport.

Designed for native, not adapted from web

This is a separate discipline from our responsive web design work: native mobile design starts from each platform's own navigation and component conventions instead of a browser layout resized down to a phone screen.

Designed for native, not adapted from web

iOS and Android get their own screens where it matters

Where the platforms diverge meaningfully, such as navigation structure or system component styling, we design two versions instead of one compromise design that fits neither platform's users well.

Store assets are part of the deliverable

App Store and Google Play both reject or delay submissions over incorrectly sized screenshots and icon assets. Store-ready exports are included, not a follow-up request after the design phase ends.

Design tokens map straight into code

Spacing, color, and type tokens are structured to correspond to SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose theme definitions, so engineering isn't reverse-engineering pixel values from a static mockup.

Mobile App Design FAQ

Responsive design adapts a website's layout across browser viewport widths using CSS breakpoints; it's still fundamentally a web page. Native mobile app design starts from each platform's own interaction model instead: iOS navigation stacks and tab bars versus Android's back-stack and navigation drawer conventions, native gesture patterns, and each platform's own component library (UIKit/SwiftUI vs. Material 3). A responsive web app and a native mobile app solve different problems and shouldn't share one design.

It depends on how much the platforms diverge for a given screen. Navigation structure, system dialogs, and platform-specific components (like iOS action sheets vs. Android bottom sheets) usually warrant separate designs. Simpler content screens can often share one visual design with platform-appropriate component swaps. We flag this screen by screen rather than defaulting to either approach.

A Figma file with a structured component library, documented design tokens (spacing, color, typography), annotated specs per screen, and an interactive prototype. If we're also building the app, the tokens are structured to map directly onto SwiftUI or Jetpack Compose theming, which removes a step where a developer has to translate a static mockup into code values.

Yes, that's included. App Store and Google Play screenshot sets, app icon exports at every required resolution, and the Play Store feature graphic are part of the deliverable, sized to each store's current specifications rather than left for you to produce separately after the design is done.

Native Android Development

Full native Android application development in Kotlin, built directly on the Android SDK rather than a cross-platform abstraction layer. Jetpack Compose, Google's current declarative UI toolkit and the default for new Android projects, is used for all new screens; this page now covers what was previously a separate, narrower Jetpack Compose UI listing, since Compose is our standard approach on every native Android build, not an add-on.

Wearable App Development

watchOS and Wear OS app development for Apple Watch and Android-based smartwatches, built around constraints that don't exist on phones: a screen under two inches, short glance-based sessions, and a battery budget that punishes background work. Covers complications, health sensor integration through HealthKit and Health Connect, and the choice between a standalone watch app and a companion app that depends on a paired phone.
