Critical Feature Build

A tightly scoped sprint to ship one specific, high-stakes feature into a product you already have running. It is not a full MVP build and not open-ended iteration: one feature, scoped and priced before work starts, delivered in one to three weeks.

How a Critical Feature Sprint Runs

1

Scoping Before Sprinting

  • A feature spec is written and signed off before any code is touched, so scope does not drift mid-sprint
  • The technical approach is validated against your existing codebase and architecture, not built in isolation
  • Edge cases and failure states get defined upfront: what happens when a payment fails, when the model times out, when a third-party API is down
  • A clear definition of done, specific acceptance criteria, not a vague sense that it looks about right
2

High-Stakes Feature Types We Build

  • Payment and billing flows, including Stripe subscriptions, usage-based billing, and invoicing
  • AI feature integration: adding one LLM-powered capability into an existing product surface
  • Third-party integrations such as Salesforce, Slack, calendar sync, or SSO
  • Auth and permissions overhauls, including roles or multi-tenant access control
3

Shipping Into an Existing Codebase

  • Onboarding to your codebase, conventions, and deployment pipeline before writing any feature code
  • Feature flags for a staged rollout instead of a single flip-the-switch deploy
  • Tests written against the specific feature and integrated into your existing CI
  • Code reviewed against your team's own standards, not delivered as an unreviewed drop
4

Sprint Structure

  • Early days: scoping, technical design, and environment access
  • Core build phase with daily async updates so nothing surfaces as a surprise at the end
  • Final days for testing, edge-case hardening, and a staged rollout
  • A handoff call walking your team through the implementation and any follow-up items

Live collaboration, in-app notifications, or chat built on a realtime backend.

Data Migrations

Schema changes and data backfills for a feature that touches existing production data.

Platform Extensions

Bringing an existing web feature to mobile, or adding a new client surface.

Scoped PR Delivery

The feature shipped as reviewable, incremental pull requests into your existing repo.

Why This Sprint Model Works

One feature, fully scoped

We do not start writing code until the spec, edge cases, and acceptance criteria are agreed on, so the sprint does not turn into open-ended discovery.

One feature, fully scoped

Built inside your codebase

We work in your repo, following your conventions and deploy process, not a separate branch that needs reconciling later.

Built inside your codebase

Fixed timeline, fixed price

A critical feature sprint is quoted and scheduled as one to three weeks before it starts. No open hourly clock.

Edge cases handled before launch

Payment failures, API timeouts, and permission edge cases are defined and tested during the sprint, not discovered by your first users.

Critical Feature Build FAQ

Post-MVP iteration is an ongoing engagement: recurring sprints, prioritized from usage data, covering multiple features over months. A critical feature build is a single, tightly scoped sprint for one specific feature you already know you need, typically because it's blocking a launch, a contract, or a fundraise. There's no ongoing retainer; it starts and ends with that one feature shipped.

Anything blocking revenue, a signed contract, or a compliance requirement: a payment flow that has to work before a launch date, an SSO integration a customer is requiring before they'll sign, or an AI feature a competitor just shipped. If it needs to exist and be reliable within a few weeks, it fits this model.

We need read and write access to the specific repo, plus a scoped environment to deploy to, either staging or a feature-flagged production path. We do not need access to unrelated systems, and we work under an NDA before any code access happens.

That should surface during scoping, before the sprint starts, which is why we do not skip that step. If genuinely new complexity is discovered mid-sprint, we flag it immediately and re-scope rather than silently running over.

That's the default model. We ship the feature into your repo, document it, and run a handoff walkthrough. Ongoing maintenance is your team's from that point, unless you want to move into a post-MVP iteration or team augmentation engagement.
